Babatunde Fashola and His "Apology" – Femi Fani Kayode

The deportation of Igbos to Anambra state by the Lagos State Government a few months back was what sparked off all the Igbo/Yoruba bashing that happened online recently.

Governor Fashola apologized to the Igbos for the incident on September 26, 2013. However, Femi Fani Kayode doesn't think he should have apologized.

There can be little doubt that the relocation of the 19 Igbo destitute from Lagos state a few months ago was a lawful exercise and that it was done in the interest of Lagos state. Consequently I do not believe that Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola ought to have tendered any form of apology whatsoever to the Igbo for what he did. The only redeeming factor is the fact that the apology was obviously designed simply to calm frayed nerves and I commend Fashola for that gesture if nothing else. I say this because my understanding is that he apologised NOT for the deportation itself but for ''the misunderstanding that arose from it''. There is a world of difference between the two. I also commend him for admonishing the Igbo to develop their own region and to decide whether they are ''Igbo before they are Nigerians or Nigerians before they are Igbo''.

This is a fundamental question that I believe that we must all determine in our hearts and minds whether we are of Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa/Fulani or Ijaw stock or anything else. For the purposes of clarification the debate that has been raging in the land for the last two months, though sparked off by Fashola's relocations, was more about the curious claim that Lagos state was ''no man's land'' which the Igbo jointly own with the Yoruba and which they had developed, and are indeed still developing, with their money and nothing else. It was that assertion, and not the plight of a handful of Igbo destitues, that many of us from west of the River Niger took issue with. Fashola and others have said publicly that it is ''absurd'' and ''insulting'' for anyone to call Lagos state ''no-man's land'' and that is good enough for me. As long as he did not apologise for saying that I have no problem with whatever he may or may not have said about the deportations even though, had I been governor, I would have handled it differently. The truth is that the Yoruba way is to apologize not only when you are wrong but also when you are right if you believe that the other party has been badly hurt by your actions. It is a generous and kind disposition which is borne out of the Yoruba concept of the ''omoluwabi spirit''- a good heart and a clean spirit that desires, above all else, peace, joy and harmony. Yet to those from outside Yorubaland that do not share that disposition, that do not understand that spirit and that cannot even begin to comprehend it, an apology is nothing less than an admission of guilt and wrong- doing and a trophy of triumph to those whom it is offered. It is for this reason that I believe that it was wrong for Fashola to apologise and that it is important for us to consider the long term implications of what he has done. The truth is that in life perception counts for everything. And rightly or wrongly the perception that most people have, particularly amongst the Igbo, is that Fashola has indeed apologised for the deportations. This perception is supported by misleading newspaper headlines which were drafted and written by journalists who did not bother to read the text or properly decipher the statement. Whether anyone likes it or not this latest development is viewed as a great triumph for the hardline Igbo nationalists and the Governor Peter Obi's of this world who honestly believe that the igbo have some kind of special rights or special status in Lagos and indeed in Yorubaland. They say and do things in Lagos and other parts of the west that they dare not do in the north and that they will never allow our people to do in the east. This is because they fear the northerners who have often put them in their place when they cross the line but they have nothing but contempt for us. Fashola has now given those within the Igbo community that have this mindset far more legitimacy, strength and confidence. In any case now that dishing out apologies is the order of the day and he has set the precedent, the question has to be asked- will Peter Obi take a cue from that, be a gentleman and apologise for deporting the people of Akwa Ibom from his Anambra state as well? Is Obi that reasonable or charitable? Do those that think like him believe that what is good for the goose is good for the gander? I doubt it very much. Again will Fashola apologise to the numerous northerners that he deported from Lagos as well and will he apologise to his Yoruba kith and kin from Oyo and Osun for deporting them too? I really do wonder how far this new-found large-heartedness and seasonal expression of regrets will go? Will it be spread everywhere or is it exclusively reserved for the Igbo? More importantly, in the spirit of this new rapprochement, will Fashola secretly concede portions of Lagos state and Yorubaland to them as well? Will he take my dear egbon and former cabinet colleague, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe's counsel, and wholeheartedly accept the interesting notion that the Igbo have ''married all our daughters'' in idungaran and isale-eko and that we should therefore give all our land and territory to them? Will he give up the patrimony of his people all in the name of trying to appease the Igbo and get their votes for the APC in the upcoming governorship election in Anambra state? If that is the plan I doubt that it will work because they are a pretty unforgiving lot. The more you give the more they will ask for and at the end of the day you will end up losing far more than you gain. Governor Chris Ngige, who is an amiable gentleman and one of the most decent, accommodating, liberal, detribalised and civilised people that I know from the east, will gain nothing from this and sadly the person that will gain from it will be the hardline, igbocentric Peter Obi and his APGA candidate in November’s gubernatorial election in Anambra state. People like Fashola need to understand that sometimes in trying to play the generous statesman and the kind-hearted omoluwabi we end up being taken for granted and making fools of ourselves. You only apologise to those who will appreciate it, who do not necessarily see it as an admission of guilt and who will not misconstrue it as weakness. This is because the display of weakness by any leader, no matter how well-liked, only attracts impudence and aggression from those who have a hidden agenda. A word is enough for the wise.

Images From Space Confirm Pakistan Earthquake Created New Island

We now have confirmation from space that a new island has formed off the coast of Pakistan. Yesterday, NASA sent their Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite to check on the situation, and it took the picture on the right above (and below). The island is most likely a pile of mud from the ocean floor that erupted as a mud volcano shortly after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck northwestern Pakistan.

The image on the left was taken by the Landsat 8 satellite on April 17. The region has seen mud volcanoes in the past, including one spied by satellites in 2011. The volcanoes form when mud and or water is squeezed out of the sediment on the ocean floor, which may have been caused by the earthquake in this most recent instance.

WARNING: How Hackers Are Obtaining Your Credit Card Information

It’s incredibly easy for hackers to counterfeit your credit or debit card without even laying a finger on it!

Last year, counterfeit cards at ATMs racked up $426M in fraud. Brian Krebs, a security journalist, shared some of the common ways hackers are obtaining your information.

Skimmers are plastic devices that fit over the top of an ATM’s card acceptance slot. The electronic components within the device steal the information that’s stored in the stripe on the back of your card. Oftentimes, there’s also a hidden camera that allows hackers to capture video of you entering your PIN number.

Another device putting you at risk is the PIN pad overlay, which fits over the real PIN pad and records your PIN presses.

'Control+Alt+Delete' Was a Mistake...Bill Gates

Bill Gates recently admitted that the familiar "Control+Alt+Delete" command was a "mistake."

During a far-reaching discussion at Harvard on Sept. 21, Gates was questioned about why the architects of the PC decided to go with the Control+Alt+Delete command. He said the decision was actually made by IBM.

"We could've had a single button, but the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn't want to give us our single button," Gates said. "It was a mistake."

That guy, as GeekWire pointed out, is David Bradley, who designed the original IBM PC. During IBM's 20th anniversary of the IBM PC, Bradley said Control+Alt+Delete came about when PC architects were "trying to solve a development problem." While testing software, it would often freeze, requiring a reboot. As a result, Bradley created a shortcut, which was Control+Alt+Delete.

Developers "originally intended it to be an Easter egg," Bradley continued, but news of the shortcut caught on. "It was like a five-minute job," he said, "I didn't realize I was going to create a cultural icon when I did it."

He then quipped that while "I may have invented it, but I think Bill made it famous."

"We did some very clever things" when developing the PC, Gates said last week, but Control+Alt+Delete was not one of them.

Gates went into a bit more detail about why such a command is necessary, regardless of the keyboard configuration. "When you turn your computer on, you're going to see some screens and eventually type your password in, you want to have something you do with the keyboard that is signaling to a very low level of the software – actually hard-coded in the hardware – that it really is bringing in the operating system you expect," Gates said.

The hour-long chat delved into the rise of Microsoft, Gates's current philanthropic efforts, his friendship with Warren Buffett, and more. The Control+Alt+Delete part of the discussion comes in around 16:30 in the video below.

HEALTH: Nose Grows on One Man’s Forehead

Chinese surgeons at a hospital in Fuzhou, Fujian grew a new nose on a 22-year-old man’s forehead after an accident left his original one unusable, Reuters reports.
Xiaolian had sustained injuries to his original nose after a traffic accident, which led to a severe infection and deformity.
To craft the new appendage, doctors took cartilage from Xiaolian’s ribs and implanted it under skin tissue on his forehead. When finished growing later this month, the nose will be transplanted to its proper place.
In January, British doctors grew a nose on a man’s arm after he lost his original to cancer.

2013 Forbes 400: Facts And Figures On America's Richest

Bill Gates is the richest American for the 20th year in a row and has reclaimed the title of world’s richest person from Mexico’s Carlos Slim with a net worth of $72 billion.Warren Buffett, again number two, was the year’s biggest dollar gainer, having added $12.5 billion to his fortune. Facebook’s hot stock pumped up Mark Zuckerberg’s fortune by $9.6 billion and put him back into the top 20 after missing the top cut last year; Carl Icahn lost his battle to stop Dell DELL -0.11%from going private but he had a great year and moves back in the top 20 for the first time since 2008. The biggest percentage gainer was Workday’s David Duffield, whose fortune more than tripled to $6.4 billion, and just behind him in terms of percentage jumps was the entrepreneur Elon Musk, now worth $6.7 billion and ranked 61st.

Five years after the financial crisis sent the fortunes of many in the U.S. and around the world tumbling, the wealthiest as a group have finally gained back all that they lost. The 400 wealthiest Americans are worth just over $2 trillion, roughly equivalent to the GDP of Russia. That is a gain of $300 billion from a year ago, and more than double a decade ago. The average net worth of list members is a staggering $5 billion, $800 million more than a year ago and also a record. The minimum net worth needed to make the 400 list was $1.3 billion. The last time it was that high was in 2007 and 2008, before property and stock market values began sliding. Because the bar is so high, 61 American billionaires didn’t make the cut.

There are 20 newcomers to the list. Among the notables are Michael Rubin, whose online sports merchandise retailer Fanatics, recently attracted venture capital investors at a sky-high valuation; Jeff Sutton, who owns a number of the priciest store fronts on Fifth Avenue and Times Square, and 35-year-old Robert Pera, one of just nine under 40, whose wireless networking gear maker Ubiquiti Networks surged after a strong earnings announcement in August. At the time he tweeted this lyric from a Jay-Z song: “And as for the critics, tell me I don’t get it. Everybody can tell you how to do it, they never did it.”

Only 30 people from last year’s list are poorer than a year ago. Twenty-eight people dropped out of the ranks and six people died, including surround sound pioneer Ray Dolby. Of those 28, only 15 saw their fortunes drop, including T. Boone Pickens, whose costly bets on wind energy lost him his billionaire status, and Manoj Bhargava, whose 5-Hour Energy drink firm has been hit by lawsuits and falling revenues. The rest simply couldn’t keep up with the rising tide. Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder is one of the billionaires who didn’t qualify and, in his case, even with a rise in his fortune, just didn’t have enough to stay in the club.

METHODLOGY

This is the 32nd year of the flagship Forbes 400. Even though we’ve been at it a long time, it is always a challenge. Our reporters dig deep. This year we started with a list of 600 individuals considered strong candidates and then got to work. When possible we met with list candidates in person; we spoke with nearly 100 billionaires this year. We also interviewed their employees, handlers, rivals, peers and attorneys. We pored over thousands of Securities & Exchange Commission documents, court records, probate records, federal financial disclosures and Web and print stories. We took into account all assets: stakes in public and private companies, real estate, art, yachts, planes, ranches, vineyards, jewelry, car collections and more. We also factored in debt. Of course, we don’t pretend to know what is listed on each billionaire’s private balance sheet, although some candidates did provide paperwork to that effect.

Some billionaires who preside over privately held companies were happy to share their financial figures, but others were less forthcoming. A few even threatened to sue. To value these businesses we coupled estimates of revenues or profits with prevailing price-to-revenue or price-to-earnings ratios for similar public companies.

We did not include dispersed family fortunes (like the Du Ponts) when individual net worths were below our minimum. But we did include wealth belonging to a member’s immediate relatives if the wealth could be traced to one living individual; in that case, you’ll see “& family” on our list as an indication.

Our estimates are a snapshot of each list member’s wealth on Aug. 23, when we locked in net worth numbers and rankings. Some of The Forbes 400 will become richer or poorer within weeks—even days—of publication.

Arsenal Go Top Of EPL With Win Over Stoke

Arsenal rose to the top of the English Premier League table after a 3 -1 victory at home to Stoke on Sunday.

minute-by-minute commentary of the Premier League game between Arsenal and Stoke City and at the Emirates Stadiumon Sunday Sep 22, 2013,

Arsenal 3 Stoke City 1 (Final score)
Ramsey 4, Mertesacker 35, Sagna 71 - Cameron 25
There was much talk about the changing faces of both these teams in the pre-match.
Arsenal have a dynamic new midfield combination in Mesut Özil and Aaron Ramsey with Jack Wilshere sort of fit and able to be part of a formidable trio. Stoke are trying to move away from their ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ days and be more expansive and progressive with the ball.
Here the home side rarely clicked into top gear, but still managed three goals with Özil registering an assist for all of them – Aaron Ramsey made the most of poor goalkeeping from Asmir Begovic for the first, Per Mertesacker climbed highest to head in the second, and Bacary Sagna looped in a third.
That all three goals came from set pieces - two from headers by defenders that would have been easily prevented with the simple provision of a man on each post – shows the danger of Mark Hughes trying to change too much too soon.
It was all very annoying for a sizeable travelling support, because Stoke were well in the game when Geoff Cameron equalised in the first half and could easily have extracted a point from a game with the league’s form team had they done the defensive basics better. This would never have happened in Pulis’ day.
Seven wins on the spin now for the league-leading Gunners.
Full Time - Arsenal 3 Stoke City 1
90 + 3 min Palace 0 Swansea 2 is the final score in the other early game.
90 + 2 min Giroud is growing rather weary of the physical approach of Shawcross and Huth and he's taken another whack for his troubles here. Arsenal get the ball moving again and Ramsey turns into the area before drawing a save from Begovic with a powerful shot.
90 min Arsenal rolling the ball backwards and forwards happy to see out normal time, and four minutes that are being added to the end of the game. Some Arsenal fans are cheering every pass but most are, as is the tradition at this stadium, making an early escape.
86 min Not a lot of belief about Stoke now, which is understandable given the score and the time, but Walters wins a cross in the area and Ireland volleys over as they try and threaten a second goal. Dean had penalised Walters for pushing in any case.
82 min Pennant swings over a corner that's cleared out to the edge of the area where Arnautovic, in a bit of an odd place for a lone striker, mishits a first time volley that's blocked away.
80 min Mesut Özil goes off to a standing ovation from the Arsenal fans.
79 min Shawcross has a volley of abuse for the assistant referee about some perceived holding he felt he was victim of at the last corner. Mike Dean calls him across for a quick word, possibly on a theme of 'pot, kettle, black'.
76 min Two near misses from Ryan Shawcross in a minute. Both chances come from corners, the first he hooks over via a deflection, the second he heads wide from six yards out under pressure.
74 min Stoke substitute Kenwyne Jones and bring on Jermaine Pennant. The former Arsenal man is going to play wide left, presumably with the idea that he can cut in onto his right and offer support to the new lone striker in the system Arnautovic. Arsenal take off Serge Gnabry, who can be very pleased with his afternoon's work, and send on Ryo Miyaichi who is only on the bench today because of Walcott's late withdrawal. Monreal has come on for Jack Wilshere as well.
73 min So Stoke have conceded three goals from set pieces today, including two headers from defenders. Özil put the ball in for all three and two of them would have been cleared easily had Stoke placed a defender on the back post. Somewhere out there Tony Pulis has taken himself for a walk to the end of the garden shaking his head.

GOAL! ARSENAL 3 Stoke City 1 (Bacary Sagna 71 min)
Stoke's tactic of fouling any Arsenal player who gets into full flight in the attacking third continues as Walters bundles over Wilshere. Özil takes the free kick, Sagna climbs at the far post and sends a looping header over Begovic and, several minutes later, into the far corner of the net.

68 min Same again. Stoke attack down the right, Walters crosses low this time, Flamini stabs it behind. The corner is cleared but the amber warning light is on for the home team.
67 min Attractive, eye catching move down the right between Ireland and Nzonzi finishes with a low cross that Szczesny claims before Jon Walters can equalise.
65 min Stop me if you've heard this one before: Jack Wilshere has picked up a knock and requires treatment. It's a chance for a round of drinks for everybody else at the midway point of the half, and for Stoke to send on midfielder Wilson Palacios instead of left back Eric Pieters - Marc Wilson will almost certainly drop back into Pieters' role.
63 min Stoke go straight to the other end of the field and Szczesny beats a shot from Marc Wilson out for a corner.
62 min New Stoke get caught out by a long ball down the middle of the field from Szczesny. Huth allows it to drop in behind him and Wilshere feeds Özil who hits a low shot that Begovic saves comfortably.
58 min Stoke take off Charlie Adam and bring on Stephen Ireland. Adam looks grumpy about it.
57 min That period of concerted Arsenal pressure actually sparks the home crowd into a chant of "We love you Arsenal". I wondered what it was at first, given that the only noise to this point has been the persistent booing of Ryan Shawcross. It's had all the atmosphere of a Richard Clayderman concert so far.
56 min Özil feeds Giroud in the right channel but his attempt to curl the ball around Begovic is badly miscued and flies away to safety.
55 min Huth might want to watch his step here. Now he's busy planting an arm in the back of Giroud's neck and smashing him to the ground. Özil's free kick is cleared.
52 min Stoke almost master their own downfall. Adam turns on the halfway line and plays a blind pass straight to Ganbry. Huth comes across to deal with the situation in his own special way: swatting the puny boy aside like The Simpson's Rainier Wolfcastle in full on McBain mode. Mike Dean waves advantage as Giroud is through and Begovic produces a camera save to turn aside his 20 yard shot. No surprise that Dean goes back and books Huth as Gnabry sets about picking his teeth out of the grass.
49 min News reaching us from Selhurst Park that it's now Crystal Palace 0 Swansea City 2 with a goal from Nathan Dyer immediately after half time. The Swans have been to Valencia and South London in four days and with 40 minutes left for play are currently 5-0 up on aggregate.
48 min Gnabry is certainly a confident boy. He moves inside from the right, checking onto his left foot, which Stoke probably think is a bit of a result after the pasting he's given them down the wing so far, but they're fortunate his cleanly struck left footed shot flies straight to Begovic.
47 min Mark Hughes already unimpressed with what he's seeing. He's sitting down, alone, on the front row of the dugout, waving his right arm in the air and ranting about something. He looks like that old man that every village has who wonders up and down the high street and shouts at the parked cars.
45 min No changes to either side at half time. A reminder that Theo Walcott pulled out during the warm up and was replaced by Serge Gnapry who has been excellent wide on the Arsenal right on his full league debut.
14.35 Second half begins.... Now.
14.25 Half time scores from elsewhere and then a few birthdays...Crystal Palace 0 Swansea City 1 (Michu 2 mins). If you're into league tables after four and a half games, then Arsenal are currently two points clear at the top. Swansea climb seven to tenth.

45 + 3 min No further incidents, so it's time for oranges and motivational speeches.
45 min We'll have three extra minutes, then lunch.
44 min He'll have to wait a little bit longer though, because Jones and Mertesacker have clashed heads and both require treatment. Nasty head injuries becoming a bit of a theme for the season at the moment - Romelu Lukaku didn't even know he'd scored Everton's winner at West Ham yesterday after taking a whack in the chops. I give it one more incident before the idea of players wearing helmets is raised.
42 min Pieters wrestles with Gnabry down by the corner flag, taking liberal chunks of Arsenal shirt and and shin bone. It's a soft free kick to give away but Stoke clear with few problems this time. Mark Hughes almost certainly take half time now if offered.
40 min Özil's seizes on Begovic's poor clearance, races down the right flank and cuts the ball back to Gnabry who shoots over. Not Begovic's finest half of football this.
38 min We're now back where we were 20 minutes ago. Stoke requiring a foothold in the game, Arsenal looking like the might cut loose. Wilshere feeds in Giroud but Begovic races from his line to claim the ball first.
36 min This transformation from 'Tony Pulis' Stoke City' into 'Mark Hughes' Stoke-elona' has a number of drawbacks. Not only have Stoke not threatened from their own set pieces, or bothered with their trademark long throws, but they've looked vulnerable defending a dead ball at the other end.

GOAL! ARSENAL 2 Stoke City 1 (Per Mertesacker 35 min)
Just as he did a few minutes before Mertesacker meets a corner at the near post and the ball drops into the far bottom corner with Begovic distracted by Koscileny rushing in unmarked trying to get a touch. It's the German's goal though.

31 min Wilshere is starting to have real influence on this match now. He's on the end of a flowing move in the Stoke penalty box but the shot is deflected away for a corner. Mertesacker meets Özil's delivery and it looks goalbound but Stoke clear from the line.
29 min Wilshere almost, almost has Giroud through on goal but Huth and Shawcross close out the situation.
27 min Totally different game all of a sudden. Gibbs' loose touch gives Jones a clear sight of the Arsenal goal but his control is equally poor and Mertesacker mops up. Credit to Stoke for fighting their way back into a game that only looked to be going one way in the first quarter of an hour.

GOAL! Arsenal 1 STOKE CITY 1 (Geoff Cameron 25 min)
Problem solved. Deep cross to the back post is volleyed skillfully against the post by Arnautovic and Cameron sweeps home the rebound from the edge of the box with Szczesny committed to the first effort.
24 min Left back Kieran Gibbs cuts in from the left wing but lashes a shot high over the bar and off towards Camden Town.
22 min Perhaps a set piece holds the key... A free kick won right on the cusp of the Premier League by Adam is cleared by the wall initially, and then behind for a corner by Koscielny and Arsenal; clear their lines.
21 min So Stoke have a bit of a problem here. They've only scored three goals in four league games so far and been kept scoreless twice already this season. Lone striker Kenwyne Jones hasn't scored a league goal in 2013. Falling behind early was a worst case scenario for them and allows Arsenal to calmly keep the ball and await further opportunities.
16 min This is a Stoke side with no long thrower. One by the corner flag is played short and wasted. Those adverse to change will be wholly uncomfortable watching this. Szczesny in the Arsenal goal must be delighted.
13 min Arsenal force their first corner of the game. Again the Gunners raid down the right with Gnabry but the delivery from Özil is easily claimed by Begovic, which might help his mood after that first goal.
11 min Mark Hughes' touch isn't what it was. A clearance flies out of play towards him in the technical area and he attempts to return it with an elaborate volleyed back heel that sends it skewing off down the touchline. Hughes is playing it cool, hands in pockets, but he'll be furious with that one.
9 min Quick update on Theo Walcott who was named in the starting 11 but pulled out in the warm up. Walcott was ill yesterday, and suffered an abdominal injury prior to this game and has been replaced on the bench by Ryo Miyaichi. Wilshere is limping around now, so the injury worries could be about to get worse...
7 min Stoke need to get a foothold in this game quickly. Arsenal are in flying form, particularly down the right flank with Gnabry impressing on his first start. Another move ends with Cameron upending Wilshere on the edge of the box but it's a fair tackle this time and play is waved on.

GOAL! ARSENAL 1 Stoke City 0 (Aaron Ramsey 4 min)
Not 0-0 today. Pattern being set early here as Arsenal try and cut through with the ball at Wilshere's feet and Charlie Adam bundles him to the ground. This free kick is closer to goal and Özil tries his luck with a left footed shot around the wall. Begovic gets down comfortably to the ball but parries it back into the danger zone and the man of the moment Aaron Ramsey is on hand to tap in from close range. Begovic will be very disappointed with his part in that.

2 min Huth is penalised for an early handball midway into his own half of the field but Arsenal are still in full-on give-everybody-a-feel-of-the-ball mode and elect against putting the ball into the box, where they're at a clear physical disadvantage, in favour of trying to pick a way through the massed Stoke ranks. Comes to nothing.
13.30 We're underway in North London. Stoke, in a lively black and fluorescent yellow number, kicking with their travelling support behind them in the first half.
13.27 Finally ready to go, teams lead out by our referee this afternoon Mike Dean.
13.25 Teams in the tunnel. Well, Stoke are, Arsenal are keeping the visitors waiting. Fair warning, everything I touch at the moment turns into a 0-0 draw. Brace, brace...
13.15 BREAKING TEAM NEWS
Just as Arsene Wenger finishes giving an interview talking about naming the same team and not having injuries, Theo Walcott withdraws at the eleventh hour with illness. Serge Gnabry is moved into the starting 11 for his first Premier League start.

12.55 Those of you missing Mario Balotelli's unique brand of behaviour and self control since his departure from Man City could do a lot worse than keeping a regular check on Arnautovic's antics over the coming months. Time with Twente in Holland, Inter Milan and Werder Bremen were peppered with the standard disputes with management that every problem child should have on their CV, but plenty else besides.
The man Jose Mourinho said had the "attitude of a child" has previously torn knee ligaments while playing with his dog, told an Austrian police officer he earned so much money he could "buy your life" after being stopped for speeding and fought with numerous team mates at both his clubs and while on international duty. Talent with questionable temperament, just the ticket in what has been a dull start to the top flight season overall.
12.45 Olivier Giroud, four goals in four games in the league this season and another in the Champions League, recovers from knock to knee to lead the Arsenal line.
Stoke drop Matthew Etherington to the bench and give a full debut to Austrian foward Marko Arnautovic.
12.40 Team news for today's game...
Arsenal: Szczesny; Sagna, Mertesacker (c), Koscielny, Gibbs; Flamini, Ramsey; Wilshere, Ozil, Walcott; Giroud
Subs: Viviano, Jenkinson, Vermaelen, Arteta, Monreal, Bendtner, Gnabry
Stoke City: Begovic; Cameron, Shawcross (c), Huth, Pieters; Walters, Wilson, Nzonzi, Adam, Arnautovic; Jones
Subs: Sorensen, Whelan, Pennant, Palacios, Crouch, Etherington, Ireland.
12.30 The script for an encounter between Arsenal and Stoke City has become rather worn and dogeared in recent years.
At Ashburton Grove, Stoke put 11 men behind the ball and see if they can play out time without conceding a goal. At the Britannia Stadium it’s all bullying, fire and brimstone as they attempt to intimidate points from a physically inferior side. With Tony Pulis in one dugout and Arsene Wenger in the other nothing looked like changing any time soon.
But this, we’re told, is a new Stoke. Mark Hughes, wounded by a catastrophic reign as Queens Park Rangers manager and with as point to prove, is busy ripping up the blueprint that has won Stoke a consolidated Premier League place but few friends and is trying to turn them into a more palatable outfit to watch.
Given just how badly Hughes did at Loftus Road, signing a host of big name stars and making grand, outlandish statements about the club’s ambition before crashing and burning on the field, Stoke’s decision to appoint him as Pulis’ successor was a bold one. And as Stoke have used their midfield as little more than ballast for sometime now, four extra dogs to guard the scrap yard, the changes he’s trying to make won’t be an overnight job.
But things are looking good. Three wins, a draw and a very narrow defeat at Liverpool on day one that would have also been drawn but for a late Jon Walters penalty miss. Man City were second best to Hughes’ side last week at the Britannia, and they’ve already won an away game at West Ham – Stoke won just two on the road in the whole of last season, and Hughes didn’t manage a single away win in the league during his entire 11 month reign at QPR.
A month ago they’d probably have fancied their chances of causing an upset at Arsenal. The natives were restless when a summer of failed transfer bids, while bitter rivals Tottenham were signing the world and his wife, opened up into a 3-1 home defeat by Aston Villa on day one.
But in Mesut Özil the Gunners have made arguably the Premier League signing of the summer, and in Aaron Ramsey they have a player reborn and finally starting to fulfil the potential before he fell victim to an appalling tackle and shattered shin at the hands of Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross three years ago. Özil's home debut and Ramsey v Shawcross interesting subplots to this lunch time game.
Ramsey shows the value of working with and coaching as player you already own, rather than immediately rushing off to the transfer market at every given opportunity – something Spurs might want to consider themselves as each new arrival moves the talented Lewis Holtby further down their pecking order.
Wenger can afford a smug smile after recovering from the Villa debacle to win six on the spin. Despite Stoke's improvement, they're heavy favourites to make it seven today.

Team News
After winning for a tenth successive game away from home, in Marseille on Wednesday, Arsenal return to the Emirates amd Midfielder Mikel Arteta could return to the squad for the first time this season after a thigh injury.
Santi Cazorla remains sidelined, so record signing Mesut Özil is set for his home debut following his club-record £42 million arrival from Real Madrid.
Czech playmaker Tomas Rosicky is also still out, along with France Under-21 forward Yaya Sanogo, German forward Lukas Podolski and longer-term absentees Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Abou Diaby.
Midfielder Charlie Adam has been Stoke's only injury concern ahead of Sunday's game.
The Scotland international needed stitches in a cut after a training ground incident but the Potters expect him to be fit to feature at the Emirates Stadium.
Midfielder Stephen Ireland and forward Mark Arnautovic, who made their debuts off the bench against Manchester City last week, are pushing for first starts.
Match Notes
Aaron Ramsey's trigger-happy start to the season may have grabbed headlines, but it is Mesut Özil who may prove Arsenal's key midfielder here on his home debut.
Mark Hughes has made a quietly impressive start to life at Stoke, who have yet to concede more than once in a game this season.
Özil's rare talent for breaching teak-tough defences will be tested to the full.

Students Don’t Want Us To End Strike – ASUU President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it is continuing its nationwide strike on the advice of university students.
READ MORE: http://news.naij.com/46516.html
In a telephone interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, the President of the union, Dr. Isa Fagge, said students were tired of the incessant industrial actions by the university lecturers due to the Federal Government’s failure to implement the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009.
Fagge said the union had decided to heed the advice of the students to continue the strike until the Federal Government fully implemented the agreement.
“Our students have come out to say they don’t want us to call off the strike until the Federal Government answers us, because they don’t want us to call off now and later we go back to strike again. So, we are heeding the advice of our students,” he said.
On the complaint by the Federal Government that it lacked the funds to implement the agreement, Fagge said it was not all about money, noting that government did not need funds to start implementing some parts of the agreement.
“There are issues and agreement they can implement without money. Why don’t they begin with those ones?” he asked.
He added that it was unfortunate that the government had pulled out of dialogue with ASUU, stating that the union would not be intimidated.
He said, “Now, government has pulled out of the dialogue. We thought we were the ones going on strike, but now government has also gone on strike.”
Last Thursday, university students under the auspices of the National Association of Nigerian Students reportedly staged a peaceful protest in Ado-Ekiti and flayed the Federal Government for failing to honour the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009.
The students, who were from public universities, threatened to disrupt activities of private universities, adding that the government was not bothered about their plight because children of government officials were studying either in private universities or studying overseas.
The university lecturers began an indefinite strike on July 1 and have been demanding full implementation of the agreement ASUU had with the Federal Government in 2009, which among other things include the UNESCO-recommended 26 per cent budgetary allocation for education. However, the government said it could not implement the agreement, and is seeking re-negotiation.
The Federal Government, last Wednesday, accused ASUU of being unrealistic by continuing its nationwide strike and asked it to rethink its demands, considering other commitments government has.
The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who gave government’s position on the strike when he briefed journalists at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council, said apart from security, education was one of the sectors the government had expended a lot of money on.

Samsung unveils the Galaxy Note 3 & Gear; to hit Nigeria in October

The future is finally here! The most anticipated device on the planet this year has finally dropped!

Putting an end to all the leaks, rumors and phantom specs, Samsung released the Galaxy Note 3 and Gear at an exciting Global Unpack event in Berlin, Germany last night. Samsung mobile fans in Nigeria were able to watch the event via a Live Stream on the Samsung Mobile Nigeria Facebook page and YouTube channel. If you missed it, no worries you can still enjoy the global event here..

For lovers of mobile technology and the large display domain, the Galaxy Note 3 represents the pinnacle of raw mobile power. The thinner and lighter Galaxy Note 3 has ditched the plastic rear casing found on previous versions, instead opting for a faux-leather finish, complete with stitching amidst some mind-blowing hardware specs that make everything so fast and so simple.

The 1920 x 1080 resolution display is accompanied by a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera, 32 or 64 GB of storage with microSD card support, and a big 3,200 mAh battery. Simply put, this means the Galaxy Note 3 is creative tornado in the palm of your hands.

The Galaxy Gear is a glanceable notification device, informing you of incoming calls, texts, messages and alerts. But the Gear also has some clever integration with Samsung’s smartphones, so when you take the phone out of your pocket, those messages instantly appear on the big screen. Wow. Fun thing is, it comes in some cute colors as well!

The Enhanced S Pen brings with it a number of new software features, including Air Command, which pulls up a radial menu for quick access to built-in stylus-friendly apps like Actions Memos, S Note, Scrapbook, and S Finder. Air Command can be accessed from anywhere in the operating system by simply hovering the S Pen just above the screen and pressing the button on the stylus.

The Galaxy Note 3 and the gear hits stores on October 2013, but you can avoid the rush and pre-order one here now and have it delivered to you free, anywhere in Nigeria.
